The Life of a Wizard Chapters:
Chapter One:
Prologue:
In the cold breeze that signaled winter, a lone baby’s cry could be heard in the forest that bordered the town of Henz in the country of Galganiza in the continent of Malbix. The forest was home to the great wizard La Feeh.
He was respected for his wisdom and his ability to use magic. Even the KIngs of the countries that surrounded Galganiza would have to bow their heads if he were to come to their kingdoms.
However, La Feeh did not like the people who pretended to be sincere while they only wanted his power. He did not like it that people would respect him only because of his power. That is why he lived in the forest by Henz.
The forest’s name was the Forest of the Dead, for many undead lived in the forest. Undead are beings that died, but left lingering regret behind. They are hated because they are as strong as dragons and can only die after piercing at least 2 of their vitals, like their brain and heart. Also, if you don’t burn them, they will revive again.
Most undead are evil because after dying, the soul goes through many tests, and the ones that pass the test are allowed rebirth, while the failures become undead.
The test also includes the righteousness that you must have done in your life. The failures will have done terrible deeds, and were not righteous at all. Because of that, they will feel hatred towards the world, and will try to destroy it.
Because of these reasons, La Feeh wanted to live here. Here, no person will wander to. Here, he will finally get the peacefulness he wants. Here, he will not be bothered by those pesky nobles. The undead? No problem for him. He has even created a magic that has boosted his life-span for over hundreds of thousands of years. A few million undead is nothing for Le Feeh.
He has enough magic and techniques to make the entire continent of Malbix bow down to him. With a swipe of his hand, he can destroy kingdoms, he can defeat millions of armed giants without batting an eye. Why should he be defeated by undead? La Feeh being defeated by an undead was like it was raining dragons.
It has been 104 years since La Feeh has moved to the forest of the Dead, and is the start of winter. Thus we get back to the storyline. A baby’s cry could be heard on the doorstep of La Feeh’s hut that is in the middle of the forest. The hut is covered by greeneries, almost blending into the scenery. And on the doorstep of that hut is an old man.
This man is very peculiar. He has grey hair and a beard. The beard is so long that it touches the top of the man’s boots. He is wearing a robe that is completely red. The top of his head is covered with a wizard’s hat that is also red. However, his face looks as youthful as if he has just turned 20.
If a passerby had seen this scene, they would have found it very peculiar. The man’s skin looked as smooth as a newborn baby’s, and would probably have been mistaken for a youthful man in his twenties.
However, no one would mistake him for a youthful twenty-year-old after they saw his eyes. The man’s eyes were the color red and had a look that told you that the owner of the eyes had seen many things, both good and bad. The eyes held wisdom that no twenty-year-old possessed. The eyes of the youthful looking man were the eyes of a being that was as wise as a sage. That man was La Feeh.
Currently La Feeh is looking at the basket that is holding the crying baby. By the look of it, the child was a two-year old and a male. The boy had red colored eyes, the same as La Feeh, and green hair. He was about a foot tall. The expression he was making was the expression of losing something very important to him.
As La Feeh looked at the boy, he noticed that there was a letter near the crying child’s hand. La Feeh picked up the letter and read the following:
Dear Brother,
If you are reading this letter, it seems that I have passed away. The child in front of you is my son. Juash and I have both agreed upon going on a quest to save the country of Haldygh. We both know that we may not come back alive, so we decided to leave our son in your hands. I have enchanted this letter and basket so that if both Juash and my life force gets drained up, this basket will get sent to you. Please name our son Cadmar if you get this letter, and when he turns 12 please give him this letter again. Please do not talk about me and Juash to him until he turns 12 and gets this letter. Do not question us, for this is important. Please raise Cadmar with the same feeling as if you are raising your own son. Tell him that he is an orphan who was found in the outskirts of the woods near the forest. Also, try to have him be happy, but also know the vile things of this world. After becoming 10 years old, send him to the Institute of Magic in the country of Juan. I know that you may teach him magic and he may excel a lot at magic because of that and won’t need to go, but please let him. It is important. Also, teach him to protect himself. Give him a bath and good food to eat. Also teach him reading, writing, and arithmetic. This may be the ramblings of an overprotective mother, but please brother, please protect my son.
From, La Henalize
By the time La Feeh had finished reading the letter, his wise looking eyes had teared up. Even though La Feeh was an expert wizard and an expert warrior, he was still human. He could still feel sadness. So when he got a letter from his sister, one of his two last relatives, no one of the three last relatives including Cadmar, that said that she and her husband were dead, he would feel sadness.
After a while his tears stopped, and by that time the child, Cadmar, had cried himself to sleep. As La Feeh looked at Cadmar he realized that the child in front of him was his last family member. That realization just boosted his desire to raise the child. He had already wanted to raise the child because it was his sister’s last wish, but now he wanted to do it even more.
Just like his sister wanted him to, he will raise Cadmar just like she wanted him to. La Feeh decided that he was going to teach this little child to be able to defend against everything that life was going to throw at him.
Thus, the legend of Le Cadmar had started. Read to see how as Cadmar grows, he leaves behind tales of his heroics and leaves behind legends.
Chapter One:
As I woke up, I saw the sunshine peeking through the curtains in my room. Hi. My name is Le Cadmar, and I seem to have been an orphan. However, a wizard named Le Feeh had seemingly found me and decided to adopt me. He had found me on the outskirts of the forest.
I have red eyes and green hair. Every season, for some reason, my eyes turn a different shade of red. For example, in the winter my eyes are blood red, while in the spring my eyes are light red. My hair also changes colors in the different seasons as well. Except, it doesn’t just turn a different shade of green. It turns into a different color. In the winter my hair is green, in the spring my hair is red, in the summer my hair is orange, and in the fall it is brown.
Right now my hair is green so it is winter. My hair is pretty handy to Feeh though. The reason being, Feeh loves to garden and before I came, he couldn’t tell when winter was approaching and he had to pick the fruits that grew in the garden, but after I came, the day my hair turned brown, he picked all the fruits. Thanks to my hair we can eat unspoiled fruits every year. After picking the fruits, he puts them in a magic container that keeps them fresh for a whole year.
Feeh is a kind man. He taught me, a total stranger that he found on the side of the road, how to read, write, and do arithmetic. He has even given me his family name, Le. (A/N: Just to be clear, in this world names are formally written with the last name first then the first name second. If they say the first name first, it means that the people they are talking to are close friends or family. Also, Cadmar’s first name is Cadmar, and his last name is Le. Kind of like in Japan.)
He keeps teaching me new things every two years. The reason he teaches me new things every 2 years and not all the time is because he lets me comprehend the subjects that he is teaching me. Since Feeh found me when I was two years old, I have learned reading, writing, and arithmetic. If you calculate, you can conclude that I am eight years old.
I can’t wait for today, because today is when I am going to learn something new! It has been 2 years since I have started learning arithmetic, so today is going to be a new subject. I hope I can learn magic, because to me it is exciting. Seeing flames pop out of thin air, water shooting out of the palm of Feeh’s hand and seeing the hut grow with Feeh’s magic atre really exciting. By the way, Feeh is a wizard. He told me he is really strong, but I don’t believe him. Saying that he has saved a country before may sound epic……. If I hadn’t seen him trip on his own underwear. When I told him about me seeing that he just looked away whistling….. And he can't even whistle. Totally suspicious.
Anyways, I am really excited today. As I go down the stairs, I meet Feeh on the way. He was carrying laundry in his arms and didn’t see me. Because of that, we got knocked into each other.
“Whoa!” Feeh lets out a shout.
After he shouted, Feeh started to bend back, about to fall down the stairs, but then all of a sudden he flew over me.
Yep, that is what he does almost every morning. He always bumps into me on the way up the stairs. Then, as he is about to fall down the stairs, he uses wind magic to fly himself over me. He has done it so many times that I have gotten used to it. However, he has never stopped. Everytime he is about to fall down the stairs, he lets out a surprised sound. Whenever I ask him why he never remembers that I am coming down the stairs, he just comes up with a lame excuse, saying something like,”I am getting old. You will also forget things when you get old as well.”
Really. And he expects me to think of him as a great wizard. *Sigh.*
Anyway, after the bumping that had become a habit, I went down to breakfast. Usually, for breakfast we have Black Boar meat and some fruits from the garden, such as cherries and oranges. However, today the breakfast that was laid out was different.
The breakfast that was laid out today was some dragon meat and tulip berries. These were some foods that we ate during special occasions. Why? It’s because the person who hunts for prey is Feeh, since I can’t hunt yet, and Feeh doesn’t like to leave the area of the hut.
Feeh seems like he is an introvert. I have never even seen another person beside Feeh in my entire life. However, it seems like Feeh wasn’t originally an introvert, because he has portraits of himself near different castles. In those portraits, he looks really serious. If I was raised with that type of Feeh in my life, I would probably have believed him when he said that he was a great wizard.
As I waited for Feeh to come back so we could start to eat breakfast, I heard a noise up in the attic. It seems like Feeh is trying to find something there. He does that every once in a while. I don’t know what he does up there though. I have been raised well if I do say so myself, because no matter how strong the urge is, I never peek.
I believe that if someone doesn’t want you to know something about them for some reason, then it is not good manners to try to forcibly find out what they don't want you to know. Unless, it would be harmful to you. But Feeh would never do anything to harm me.
After a while Feeh came back. He had a box in his hand. The box was a square shape and was made out of wood. It was colored red and had five symbols on it. One was the shape of a cat, another was the shape of a dog, another was the shape of a boar, next was the one with the symbol that was the shape of a dragon, and one more was in the shape of a sun.
I couldn’t help but let my curiosity get the best of me and asked,”What is that box, Feeh?”
He just chuckled and said,”I will tell you about it later.”
After saying that, he put the box in a cabinet and sat down and started eating breakfast. Have I said this yet? I guess I haven't. The thing I want to tell you is that dragon meat is delicious. Since dragons are beings that have magic power, their meat is also filled with magic power. Because of this, the taste gets much better than if you were to eat regular meat. As I was eating my breakfast with a smiling face, Feeh talked to me.
He asked,”Do you know why we are eating this food that is only for special occasions?”
I replied to him after finishing swallowing,”Of course! It is because today is the day when you will teach me a new subject, right?”
Feeh said,”Yes, that is right.”
After that we were silent again. The only sound was our spoons and forks scraping against the plates. After finishing my breakfast, I stayed seated, because it was my turn to do the dishes and I wanted to wait until Feeh finished to take his dishes. After a few minutes, Feeh was done eating.
He then told me,”Don’t worry about the dishes. I will do them later.”
I was confused because Feeh was always strict about two things in my life. Learning new subjects, and doing my chores. He wants me to be very disciplined. So when he told me I didn’t have to do the dishes even though it was my turn, I was surprised.
It seemed as if Feeh caught my surprised look because he gave a little laugh. He then said,”Today, the subjects that I will be teaching you are going to be very difficult to learn, but easy to master. So, I will have you start to learn them as soon as I can.”
I didn’t miss the wording in his sentence. Feeh said that I will be learning subjects, not a subject. Plural.
I asked,”Feeh, didn’t you mean that you will teach me a new subject?”
“No, no, my boy. Today I will be teaching you two subjects instead of one. And for the next 2 years, you will master them.”
What Feeh said excited me again. The excitement that had started to calm down because of learning a new subject, had started rising again.
Feeh saw my excitement and said,”Well then, my boy. Let us start to learn new subjects.”
As Feeh led me outside to the garden for some reason, because all of my subjects were indoor things up to date, I was confused.
“Hey Feeh? Why are we going to the garden?”
“It’s of course to learn new subjects!”
Hmmmmmm. The only subjects that I can think of, that might require me to go outside, were magic and martial arts. I have read about magic in a book before, and it is said that martial arts are ways to defend yourself and fight using your body. Their origin is a mystery, though.
After a while, we got to the middle of the garden. The garden was very large. Its length is the size of thirteen Wood Apes lying with their arms touching each other. A Wood Ape is a monster that uses the Earth attribute magic and are generally 30 meters long.
The garden's width is also the same size as thirteen Wood Apes lying with their arms touching each other. The garden is a square. Right now we are in the middle of that square and Feeh is facing me.
He said,”Today, you will be starting two new subjects. They are magic and Martial Arts. However, you will not learn them individually for two years each. You will learn them each for one year, and will master them. You may be thinking that it is impossible to master them in only two years, but with my guidance, you will master them in less than the two years that are your time limit. “
What Feeh told me had shocked me, once eagain. He has been shocking me this entire morning. First not having to do the dishes, now this. What happened to that Feeh that always wants me to be very disciplined?
Perhaps there was a question mark above my head or something, because he answered my question, without me even having to say the question aloud.
“Ha, ha! You must be very confused right now, right my boy? Well Let me tell you why this day is out of the norm.”
“It is because exactly 2 years from now, when you turn ten, I will send you off to the Institute of Magic. There you will make friends and enjoy company with others of your age. Then, after going there for exactly two years, you will come back to this forest. Got that? Because you will be traveling to different places, I will be teaching you how to defend yourself. That is why you will be learning martial arts, as well as magic.”
Wait. I am going to the Institute of magic? Huh? Well, I guessed that I would have to go to the outside world one day. But isn’t this too early?!!
Let’s think about the pros and cons of going outside.
Pros:
I will meet other peopleI will learn about the outside worldI will be able to go to a school for magicI will get to make friends that are the same age as me I will be able to feel what school life is like
Cons:
I will have to travel in a world I barely know about. I will be separated from Feeh. I will have to communicate with other people beside Feeh.
Looking at the Pros and Cons it definitely looks like I should go out. The only main problems are that I will have to converse with other people who are not Feeh and that I will have to leave Feeh. You see, since I have grown up only around Feeh, I only know him. I do not know any other human beside him. I do know a lot of the monsters in this forest though. They all must be weak, because whenever one gets near, Feeh just snaps his fingers and they explode from the inside.
The cleanup is also done by Feeh, because whenever I get near the area that the monsters had exploded by, I get nauseous.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm. As I was thinking, Feeh seemed to find out what I was thinking.
“Don’t worry, boy. I think I know what you are thinking. You are probably thinking that it is not good to go to the outside world, when you haven’t even left the forest yet, right? And also that you will have to converse with other people except me? And that I will be left alone here, right? If that is the case, then don't worry. I will be going with you to the Institute of Magic, too. I have a bit of business that I have been ignoring for quite a while.”
What Feeh said relieved me. I was relieved that he will be going with me. No matter what Feeh does, or will do, he is always going to be the person who taught me about life. He is always going to be that father figure that I never had. That is why I can’t imagine going somewhere without him, and leaving him alone. I just want to say to the parents that left me on the outskirts of the forest, that you have left me with a great person. Know that I will never hate you, no matter what. I have no memories of you, but I have to thank you. Thank you for letting me meet this great man. Thank you.
Not knowing the emotions swirling inside me, Feeh keeps talking.
“The next two years are going to look like this. I will be teaching you magic and martial arts. After the two years are done, we will be going to the Institute of Magic. There, we will spend the next two years, and you will be going to the Institute. I will be finishing my business as well.”
“Finishing your business?”
What type of business does he have that it is going to take two years to complete?
“Cadmar, what business that I have to do is my business, not yours.”
In a strict tone that he doesn’t use often, he told me that I shouldn’t snoop in his business. I guess that this business of his is very important and I shouldn’t ask more about it.
Trying to clear up the tense atmosphere that had sneaked up to the two of us, before we know it, I asked,”So when are you going to teach me magic?’’
Knowing what I am trying to do, Feeh also answers my question.
“Good question, my boy. I will start to teach you right now. Do you want to start now?”
“Yes!”
It wasn’t a secret to Feeh that I loved magic. So when I enthusiastically answered the question, Feeh just chuckled.
Good. The tense atmosphere was gone. Now then, he talked about magic right? He did! He did!
“Ok then. Let’s start learning magic, ok?”
“Yeah!”
“ Before learning magic, you need to know what types of magic there are. The types of magic are: Water, fire, earth, holy, and darkness. The water type magic deals with magic including water. Fire deals with fire magic. Earth magic deals with earth. Holy magic can heal, cure, and fix wounds. Darkness can use the power of shadows, the dead, and souls. To learn magic, you need to have magic power. All living beings contain a certain amount of magic power since birth. Some may have very little magic, while others may have a great magic pool. If you have very little magic power, then there are two ways to gain more magic power. One, you have to eat the meat of a monster that has a very, very, very great magic pool. Or two, you have to exhaust your magic power to the limit. However, the second way is a bit riskier because when all the magic power in a living being’s body gets depleted, the life force of that being’s is also depleted. Why does your life force get depleted as well as all you magic? You see, when we are born, we are reincarnated. Remember the Undead? They did not pass through the trials of reincarnation, and because of that, they revived as undead. Reincarnation judges if you will be useful to this world or not. Because of that, during reincarnation, Reincarnation gets rid of all the bad apples that tarnish the World’s growth. And to the ones that pass the test, Reincarnation gives them magic. If you ever look at the undead, you can see that they are beings that do not have magic power. They have a different type of power instead…… but we’ll talk about that later.”
“Let’s get back to the main topic now, ok? You see, when we are reincarnated, Reincarnation gives us a draw back, though. Because in the next life, you never know if the good people are going to turn rotten. Because of these reasons, Reincarnation has used magic power as our drawback. You see, life force and magic are different things, but magic is stronger than life force. The soul is the place that holds our life force. However, the soul isn’t located in a specific point in the body, it moves around. Even though I say that the soul holds the lifeforce, the soul is very weak. Life force is like a wave. It moves back and forth within the soul. Overtime, it can start to destroy the soul. After completely destroying the soul, because it doesn’t have a container, it disperses into the world. And because of this, after your life force is gone, you will also be gone. The soul is weak. That is where magic comes in. Magic power, no matter how big or small, has the ability to completely cover the soul. Encased in the magic power, the soul becomes stronger. That is why the life force won’t be able to get out of the soul. But when that magic power is used up, the soul doesn’t have enough strength to captivate the life force.”
“Remember Cadmar, never exhaust your magic power.”
After saying that speech, Feeh tells me in a very strict voice to not use up my magic power.
“I know, I know. I promise to not use up my magic power.”
Feeh looked a little bit less tense after I said that. I had a question nagging at my mind, though.
“Hey Feeh, didn’t you say that you have to have magic power to use magic?”
“Yes, yes I did. Why?”
“By the way that you talked about magic power, some people have a small amount and others have a greater one, right?”
“Yes I did say that. Now, where are you going with this?”
“Well, I just wanted to know if the amount of magic power you possess, relates to the magic you can use. Like if you have a large magic pool, it means that you can use magic that uses up more magic.”
“What you said is correct, my boy.”
When Feeh said that, I thought of another question.
“Feeh, how do you know how large your magic pool is?”
“Good question. To know how large your magic power is, there is a magic tool for that.”
If you are wondering, magic tools are things that have magic imbued in them, and can do things with magic. For example, a Flame Sword is a magic tool. Just like its name states, it is a sword imbued with the fire attribute magic. When in use, the Flame Sword can light the blade of the sword on fire.
But who cares about that, right? I only care about the magic tool that tells you what the size of your magic pool is.
“So can I use the magic tool to see what my magic pool is?”
Feeh replied to my question by saying,”Sure. Here, let me take it out.”
Feeh then took out the magic tool that could measure my magic pool.
“This is called the Orb of Henzen. It was made to measure any amount of magic power……. as long as it isn’t the same amount as mine.”
Hmmmmm? Did Feeh say something?
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Nope. He didn’t, right? (A/N: My confusion skills are really terrible.... cha cha real smooth....)
By the way, the Orb of Henzen is round and looks like it is made out of a type of glass. You can see through it. The way to tell where the top and bottom of it is, is by looking at the 4 legs that are popping out from the bottom of the ball. They are made out of what seems like gold. The orb is smooth and there isn’t a single bump in it.
Feeh said,”To use it, just place your hands on the orb.”
I did what Feeh told me to do. I placed my hands on the smooth surface of the orb. After I placed my hands on the orb, it started to glow. All of a sudden, numbers started to appear on the inside of the orb! First it was one, then it went to a hundred, then a thousand…………………… after about a minute, the orb showed no signs of stopping! By now the numbers had already gone to the millions. Quickly, the numbers started getting higher! A billion then a trillion, and as the numbers got higher cracks started appearing on the magic tool!
Kreeeek!!
After I lost count of the numbers that had appeared on the orb, it let out a sound as if it had given up and shattered!
I was surprised. When I looked at Feeh who was beside me, he had a look of dismay. Wait. Did I have a very small amount of magic power? B-But, I want to be able to use strong magic though!? As I was almost at the brink of tears because I thought I had very little magic powers, Feeh spoke.
He said,”Congrats. You have a very high amount of magic power.”
I didn’t believe him. Who would believe that they had a very large amount of magic power, when the person who told them that had said it as if it was a bad thing!?
So I just told him,”You don’t have to lie, Feeh. I can tell by the tone of your voice that I have very little magic power. Otherwise, why would you sound so gloomy?”
At my words, Feeh let out a surprised expression, then said the words that surprised ME!
Feeh said,”No, you have a large amount of magic power. The reason why I was gloomy was because now that I know that you have a large amount of magic power, the nobles of the countries of this continent will probably want you to join their army or things like that. Now, you will have to hide your abilities, so that that doesn’t happen. OK?”
“Yes.” To be honest, I didn’t really care about nobles and things like that. What I did care about was that I had a large amount of magic power. Yes!
